When to apply
You can apply up to 4 months before you want benefits to start. Because you can claim as early as 62, that means applying at age 61 and 9 months at the earliest. If you plan to wait until full retirement age or later, apply about 4 months before the month you want payments to begin.
Three ways to apply
| Method | How |
|---|---|
| Online | Create or sign in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov and start the retirement application |
| By phone | Call 1-800-772-1213 to apply or to schedule an appointment |
| In person | Make an appointment at your local Social Security office |
What to have ready
- Your Social Security number and date and place of birth.
- Your bank's routing number and your account number for direct deposit.
- Your most recent W-2 or, if self-employed, your net earnings for last year.
- Your birth certificate or other proof of birth if SSA does not already have it, and military discharge papers if you served.
- Information about your spouse or former spouse if you may qualify for a spousal benefit.
What happens next
SSA may ask for documents and will mail a decision letter showing your monthly amount. Social Security pays in arrears, so the payment you receive in a month is for the previous month. See the payment schedule for your date.
Before you click submit
- Claiming early permanently reduces your benefit: see the full retirement age chart.
- If you will keep working, read about the earnings test.
- If you are 65 or older and already receiving benefits, you are enrolled in Medicare automatically; see the enrollment period guide.
Changed your mind? Within 12 months of your first benefit, you can withdraw your application, but you must repay all benefits received (including any family benefits). Ask SSA for Form SSA-521.
If you apply after reaching full retirement age, SSA can pay benefits retroactively for up to 6 months.
